Woman killed by bus
A WOMAN was killed after being run over by a bus in the city centre. The elderly victim was
hit on Parker Street, near Piccadilly bus station, at 2pm on Thursday.
Ambulances and police officers rushed to the scene, but the woman's injuries were so severe
she died.
Parker Street was yesterday closed while police conducted inquiries, causing gridlock on Portland Street.
The bus involved is the 142 Magic Bus.
One bystander, who did not want to be named, said he saw the elderly lady carrying shopping bags stepping on to the road and being struck by the vehicle.
He said: “I was looking right at her. She walked out and was hit right away. There was blood everywhere.
“She was helped by two people, a man and a woman, who took her pulse but there was nothing they could do because she died instantly.”
Buses were being diverted from the Piccadilly Gardens hub this afternoon, causing heavy congestion in the city centre.
Trams however were allowed to enter the depot. Police and emergency services sealed off the area of the accident and constructed a portable tent around the area where the woman’s body lay.
A police reconstruction team were also present and expected to carry out tests on the scene later in the day.
