Go Bananas(有香蕉吃咯)

GO BANANAS! is on tomorrow (Friday) @ 1pm in All Saints Park (opposite Man Met Union). please send out text messages, invite your friends and bring your housemates down for some free banana goodness and to give a big high five to the end of fairtrade fortnight.

Why Bananas?

Bananas symbolise the challenges in international trade. Many people who grow and harvest
bananas endure unacceptable working and living conditions, including the suppression of
independent trade unions. The workers’ local environment is often ruined by toxic
chemicals and intensive farming. But it’s not just banana farmers who face these
challenges, it’s millions of farmers and workers in developing countries, on whom we
rely for our food and drink and lifestyles. They are kept in poverty by unfair trade rules

What is Fairtrade Fortnight?

Fairtrade fortnight (23rd Feb-8th March) is two weeks of events, debates and workshops
supported by the Fairtrade Foundation and part of an ongoing campaign aiming to raise the
awareness of Fairtrade and the benefits of buying Fairtrade products. Millions of people
throughout the world do not earn enough money to live on, with 20% of the world’s
population still living on less than $1 a day. Unfair trade rules mean that in some parts
of the world, even those who work for twelve or more hours a day still can’t afford the
basics they need, let alone education and health care.

Fairtrade aims at guaranteeing producers a price for their produce which never falls
below the cost of production. This guaranteed price along side long term contracts and the
ability to request part payment in advance means that producers can start to plan and
invest their money and begin to be more financially secure.
